It grew rapidly in the 1970s, driven by Norway’s expanding oil industry, and evolved into a major research foundation. The SINTEF Group was formed in the 1980s, incorporating multiple specialized institutes. SINTEF maintains a strong partnership with NTNU, sharing laboratories, research projects, and personnel, while also collaborating with the University of Oslo and international research institutions.
