Biography

Lukas Gold received a master of science in nanostructure technology and a PhD degree from the University of Würzburg. From 2013 to 2021 he was working at the Fraunhofer R&D Center Electromobility FZEB as master student and PhD candidate.

In this time his research mostly focused on the electrochemically induced changes to mechanical properties of lithium-ion batteries. This included studies on the swelling and contraction of latter during cycling, the associated change in electrode density and porosity, as well as the changes to modulus of elasticity. He employed several x-ray and neutron imaging methods such as computer tomography and radiography to study those property changes.

His PhD thesis took this a step further, exploiting this property changes to estimate the state of charge via ultrasound. The latter allows to correlate property changes with the state of charge when employing advanced methods of digital signal processing and machine learning (like support vector machines). Additionally, he developed an ultrasound-based method to monitor the wetting process of lithium-ion batteries during cell production.

As a post-doctoral researcher, he switched the field of research to the digital transformation of laboratory and materials research in 2021 and joined the working group of Simon Stier at Fraunhofer ISC. His work here, aiming to make research data FAIR, mostly involves around the development of the knowledge management platform Open Semantic Lab, modelling of processes and items in JSON Schema and the development of the platform accompanying Python package osw-python.
