==Goals of the project==
Li4Life’s efforts support the EU’s plans to ecological transition and to become a major supplier to the fast-growing European battery sector reducing dependency on foreign Li supplies.
The project aims to introduce new environmentally friendly downstream processes to successfully create new Li value chains for Li battery-grade concentrates.
One of the key features of the project is defining the bulk use for remaining mine waste to reduce the overall environmental impact of the extraction.
Finally, the strategic implementation of the project will include the commitment to obtain a social license for its operations and business models and ensuring compliance with EU ecological framework, which are strong drivers and key to success in the sector for the medium and long term.
==Results==
* Up to 100% increase in the selective extraction of Li
* 20% increase in overall recovery of metals
* Reduction of energy requirements by up to 30%
* Full water reuse
* Waste valorisation and environmentally friendly mining practices to achieve zero waste mining
* Validation process of hihg-grade Li2CO3 for batteries (99.99%)

Abstract

Lithium, a key component in the push for clean energy, is unevenly distributed across Europe. Unlike the abundant brines of South America and Australia, EU deposits are embedded in complex mineral structures. This makes extracting and purifying lithium challenging. In this context, the EU-funded Li4Life project tackles this issue with cutting-edge technology. The initiative focuses on extracting lithium from complex ores and post-mining tailings, aiming to enhance Europe’s battery-grade lithium supply. By 2030, Li4Life plans to boost the EU’s domestic lithium supply by at least 5 %. Their strategy involves developing innovative processing techniques and ensuring compliance with stringent environmental standards, paving the way for a more sustainable and self-reliant battery industry
