Cell types and sizes can vary at the lab-scale depending on each laboratory's conventional practices. However, most academic labs utilize coin and/or pouch cell formats when assembling battery cells for research purposes while form factors like cylindrical and prismatic are less common until reaching pilot-scale production.

== Coin cells ==
Coin cells are small, metallic, round form factors that resemble a coin. Most coin cell form factors are wide, flat, and thin, although some form factors have similar widths as their thicknesses.
Coin cells are mechanically strong, durable because they are made of 304 or 316 stainless steel, and remain relatively well sealed over long periods of time.
Coin cells consistent of several components which are assembled to make the coin cell. These are sometimes labeled as the bottom, the top, and the gasket, while cell components like the anode, cathode, separator, electrolyte, wave spring, and spacer(s) are contained internally.
Since the coin cell casing is crimped when assembled, the top is mechanically deformed, and this makes the coin cell well sealed against leakage, contamination, and air exposure.
